Top tips for a smooth winter move
Aug 9, 2024

Moving during winter can present a unique set of challenges, from icy sidewalks to unpredictable weather. However, with the right preparation and strategy, you can ensure your winter move goes smoothly and efficiently. Whether you’re relocating to a new city or just a new neighbourhood, these tips will help you navigate your winter move with ease.

Plan Ahead

Winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to plan your move well in advance. Start by scheduling your moving company or truck rental as early as possible. Winter is often a slower time for moving companies, but the weather can still impact availability and scheduling. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to secure the dates and services you need.

Check the Weather Forecast

Keep an eye on the weather forecast as your moving day approaches. Knowing the conditions ahead of time allows you to prepare for potential challenges such as snow or ice. If extreme weather is expected, consider rescheduling your move to a safer day, if possible.

Prepare Your Home

Preparing both your old and new homes for winter moving can make a big difference in your moving experience.

Clear Walkways and Driveways

Before the movers arrive, clear your walkways, driveways, and any steps of snow and ice. This reduces the risk of slips and falls and makes it easier for movers to navigate. Use salt or sand to help with traction if necessary.

Ensure Heating is On

If you’re moving into a new home, ensure that the heating is on and functioning properly. A warm house will make the moving process more comfortable and prevent any damage to your belongings caused by cold temperatures.

Protect Your Belongings

Winter weather can be harsh on your belongings, so take steps to protect them during your move.

Use Quality Packing Materials

Invest in high-quality packing materials, such as sturdy boxes and bubble wrap, to keep your items safe. If you’re moving delicate items, consider using extra padding or wrapping to provide additional protection from cold and potential moisture.

Cover Furniture and Electronics

Cover furniture and electronics with moving blankets or plastic wrap to protect them from moisture and temperature changes. This will help prevent any potential damage during the move.

Dress Appropriately

Moving in winter requires special considerations for your attire.

Layer Up

Wear multiple layers of clothing to stay warm while allowing yourself to move freely. Choose moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away from your body and insulating layers to retain heat. Don’t forget a warm hat, gloves, and sturdy boots with good traction.

Prepare for Changes

Keep extra clothing and warm accessories handy in case you need to change during the move. Wet clothing can make you uncomfortable and chilled, so having a dry set of clothes available is important.

Consider Your Safety

Safety should be a top priority during any move, especially in winter conditions.

Use Non-Slip Mats

Place non-slip mats or rugs at entryways to help prevent slips and falls. This is especially important if you’re dealing with snow or ice tracked into your home.

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks

Even in winter, moving can be physically demanding. Stay hydrated, take regular breaks, and listen to your body. Moving is a strenuous activity, and keeping yourself well-rested and hydrated will help you maintain energy and focus.

Hire Professionals

If possible, consider hiring professional movers who are experienced with winter moves. They will have the expertise and equipment to handle the unique challenges of moving in cold weather.

Discuss Winter Challenges

When hiring movers, discuss the potential winter challenges with them. This will ensure they are prepared and have the necessary equipment.

Stay Flexible

Winter weather can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. Stay flexible and be prepared for potential delays or changes in schedule. Communicate with your moving company regularly to stay updated on any changes that might affect your move.

Have a Backup Plan

Have a backup plan in case of severe weather or other unforeseen issues. This might include alternative moving dates or temporary storage solutions if your new home isn’t ready for immediate occupancy.

Take Care of Your Pets and Kids

If you have pets or children, make arrangements to keep them safe and comfortable during the move.

Plan for Pet Care

Keep your pets in a safe, warm area away from the moving action. Consider asking a friend or family member to care for them during the move or hiring a pet sitter.

Entertain Kids

If you have young children, ensure they are entertained and out of the way during the move. Pack their essentials in a separate bag and have some activities ready to keep them occupied.

Conclusion

Moving in winter requires extra attention and preparation, but with the right approach, you can make the process smooth and successful. By planning ahead, protecting your belongings, dressing appropriately, and prioritising safety, you’ll be well on your way to a hassle-free move.

Second time I've used White Rose. First class service, friendly and helpful guys and looked my stuff well. They did my move over 2 days during the hottest days of the year so all credit to them. I would definitely use White Rose again if needed and would recommend them.

I am wholly satisfied by their work, packing and moving all my furniture and effects. Every member of the team worked efficiently, and they were all a pleasure to have around. I’m hoping never to have to move again, but if I do I’d book White Rose again without a doubt.

Could not fault! After trying a couple of local firms for quotes I was sold after speaking with Paul on the phone. His customer service was second to none. The actual move itself was seamless, the boys arrived early and were loaded so quick considering the heat! They worked tirelessly at both ends of the job. Massive thanks- especially working so hard in the heatwave we’re experiencing.

White Rose just helped us move from London to Yorkshire, last minute, with a newborn and a cat. They were exceptional from start to finish and really helped put our minds at ease throughout.A quick quote with a thorough breakdown of how things would play out, constant communication in the build up and the team doing the move were brilliant — they took absolute care over every detail of our stuff, professional, polite, funny. The whole thing was made so much easier thank to them. I would highly recommend them for your move.

From initial contact with Paul to the delivery of the contents of our house the service provided was excellent. This was a very challenging move as the destination was fairly inaccessible and had to involve a shuttle from the main road to the house on a hill. The 1st van got stuck in mud and they had to push it out before being able to continue. Jake went above and beyond when he chased our escapee chow chow a mile round the streets and across a busy main road until final capture involving outdoor workmen. Respectful, polite, efficient, hard working with a can do attitude at a competitive price what more does a customer need at this most stressful of times! Wishing you all the very best for a successful 2022!
