Do I need to empty chests of drawers?
Dec 18, 2023

The prospect of moving to a new house is both exciting and challenging. As you prepare to pack up your belongings, one common dilemma arises: should you empty the contents of your chests of drawers before the move? This question has sparked debates among homeowners and moving professionals alike. In this article, we’ll explore the factors to consider when deciding whether to keep those drawers full or unload them for a smoother relocation process.

Consider the Weight:

One of the primary concerns when moving furniture, including chests of drawers, is the overall weight. Filled drawers can significantly increase the weight of the furniture, making it more challenging for both you and the movers. Before making a decision, assess whether the drawers’ contents contribute significantly to the weight and if it’s feasible to move them as is.

Protecting Your Belongings:

The decision to keep items in the drawers should also consider the type of items stored inside. Fragile or breakable items may be at risk of damage during the move if left inside drawers. It’s essential to evaluate the contents and determine whether they can withstand the movement and potential jostling that occurs during transportation.

Consideration for the Furniture:

The structural integrity of the chest of drawers is another crucial factor. Some furniture is designed to be sturdy and can handle the additional weight, while others may not. If your chest of drawers is made of solid wood and is in good condition, leaving items inside may be less of a concern. However, for more delicate or antique pieces, emptying the drawers might be a safer choice.

Ease of Transportation:

Professional movers often advise on emptying drawers for ease of transportation. This not only reduces the weight but also minimises the risk of damage to both the furniture and its contents. Emptying drawers allows for better manoeuvrability, especially when navigating stairs, doorways, and tight spaces.

Streamlining the Unpacking Process:

Emptying the drawers before the move can contribute to a more organised and efficient unpacking process. It allows you to inspect and clean the interior of the furniture before setting it up in your new home. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to declutter and reevaluate the necessity of each item, preventing you from bringing unnecessary belongings to your new space.

Alternative Packing Solutions:

If you decide to empty the drawers, consider alternative packing solutions. Use packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing paper, or clothing to protect fragile items. Place these items in labeled boxes to streamline the unpacking process. Utilise the empty drawers for non-fragile, lightweight items that won’t compromise the structural integrity of the furniture.

Conclusion:

The decision to empty or not to empty your chests of drawers when moving house ultimately depends on various factors, including the weight, the nature of the items inside, and the condition of the furniture. While leaving drawers full may seem convenient, it’s crucial to weigh the potential risks and benefits. Taking the time to assess your specific situation will help ensure a smooth and stress-free relocation experience.

Second time I've used White Rose. First class service, friendly and helpful guys and looked my stuff well. They did my move over 2 days during the hottest days of the year so all credit to them. I would definitely use White Rose again if needed and would recommend them.

I am wholly satisfied by their work, packing and moving all my furniture and effects. Every member of the team worked efficiently, and they were all a pleasure to have around. I’m hoping never to have to move again, but if I do I’d book White Rose again without a doubt.

Could not fault! After trying a couple of local firms for quotes I was sold after speaking with Paul on the phone. His customer service was second to none. The actual move itself was seamless, the boys arrived early and were loaded so quick considering the heat! They worked tirelessly at both ends of the job. Massive thanks- especially working so hard in the heatwave we’re experiencing.

White Rose just helped us move from London to Yorkshire, last minute, with a newborn and a cat. They were exceptional from start to finish and really helped put our minds at ease throughout.A quick quote with a thorough breakdown of how things would play out, constant communication in the build up and the team doing the move were brilliant — they took absolute care over every detail of our stuff, professional, polite, funny. The whole thing was made so much easier thank to them. I would highly recommend them for your move.

From initial contact with Paul to the delivery of the contents of our house the service provided was excellent. This was a very challenging move as the destination was fairly inaccessible and had to involve a shuttle from the main road to the house on a hill. The 1st van got stuck in mud and they had to push it out before being able to continue. Jake went above and beyond when he chased our escapee chow chow a mile round the streets and across a busy main road until final capture involving outdoor workmen. Respectful, polite, efficient, hard working with a can do attitude at a competitive price what more does a customer need at this most stressful of times! Wishing you all the very best for a successful 2022!
